# Formula E Season Review: DS Virgin Racing

After an encouraging first season in Formula E, DS Virgin were hoping to build on their fifth in the teams’ championship

Season two for DS Virgin was a significant improvement, finishing third in the teams’ championship behind Formula E heavyweights Renault e.Dams and ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport.

Fresh out of Formula One, Jean-Eric Vergne replaced Jaime Alguersuari whilst Sam Bird remained with the team for a second consecutive season.

One win and a couple of second places is what DS Virgin achieved in season two. In season one, they won on two occasions so on the face of it, it isn’t progress, however, Bird’s three pole positions and a greater consistency means it has been a successful season for Virgin.

There is still an obvious performance gap to both Renault e.dams and ABT which they will be hoping to close next season.

After scoring two wins in the first season of the series, Bird would have hoped to challenge Sebastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi for the drivers’ title.

It turned out not to be the case. One win, two podium finishes and three pole positions ensured Bird finished fourth in the drivers’ standings behind Buemi, di Grassi and Nicholas Prost.

Bird’s strength this season came in the Superpole shootout, taking pole position in three races (Buenos Aires, Long Beach and Paris. Only one of these pole positions were converted into a race win, taking the chequered flag in Argentina.

Bird often had the upper hand over his teammate, however, he will be hoping for extra performance from the powertrain next season as he looks to mount a serious title challenge.

A couple of podiums and a single pole position is all Vergne has to show from this season. A poor start to the season saw him score just six points in the opening six rounds of the championship. A strong ending saw him take pole in Berlin and finish on the podium in Paris and London.

Vergne moves to the newly named Techeetah team for next season, who take over Team Aguri’s entry.
