Vettel: Wet tyres are not good enough

Sebastian Vettel believes Pirelli’s current wet weather tyres are not good enough to cope with the heavy rain conditions seen in qualifying at the Hungaroring.

Qualifying was delayed by 20 minutes due to heavy rainfall which drenched the Hungary circuit. Conditions did improve briefly which allowed of all the drivers to head out on wet tyres but heavy rain fell again resulting in another red flag period.

The four-time F1 champion believes the current wet tyres are not as good as Bridgestone’s wet tyres citing his win in Shanghai in 2009 which was won using the full wet tyres.

“Well I think the race that is stuck in my head is 2009 in China, it was a good race for us but it was raining like crazy and there was no problem. Not facing anywhere near the issues nowadays with that amount of rain, so I think it’s fair to say that the extreme wet that we currently have is not good and has been criticised in the past. To be fair it hasn’t changed so I think the criticism also doesn’t change.”

Ferrari endured another disappointing day with Vettel fifth and Raikkonen down in 14th. The German believes this was not due to Ferrari’s lack of pace but a combination of other factors such as the weather and traffic.

“Unfortunately when the car came alive I wasn’t able to put the lap in, we had the yellow flag in the middle sector and then I ran into traffic. Both cars that I faced, I think they could have done a better job at getting out of the way. By the time that I was in the last sector I had lost so much time that there was no point to go into the last corner at full speed.”
