Hamilton wins in Hungary for record fifth time

A faultless performance from Lewis Hamilton saw him win the Hungarian Grand Prix for a record fifth time ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.

Despite missing out on a sixth pole position at the Hungaroring due to yellow flags, Hamilton overtook his teammate off the start and controlled the race from the front with ease. Ricciardo briefly got ahead of Rosberg but the latter managed to go around the outside of Turn 2 and reclaim second place.

Rosberg stayed within a couple of seconds of Hamilton for the whole race, however, was unable to get close enough to make a move.

Ricciardo held off former teammate Sebastian Vettel for third after attempting an aggressive strategy to challenge the Mercedes but the Silver Arrows were just too quick compared to Ricciardo.

Vettel applied pressure towards the end of the race but Ricciardo was able to fend the four-time champion off.

Max Verstappen was a fairly distant fifth and was embroiled in a race long battle with the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen – who recovered from 14th on the grid. Raikkonen was unable to pass Verstappen in the latter stages of the race and clipped the back of the Red Bull, damaging his front wing but he was able to carry on.

Fernando Alonso was a comfortable seventh place for McLaren ahead of Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. Force India scored a single point with Nico Hulkenberg coming home 10th.

Sergio Perez missed out on a points finish after his Force India team were not ready for him when he came into the pits.

Haas’ Esteban Gutierrez once again finished out of the points and has not finished inside the top 10 since the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix. Jolyon Palmer has not scored a point this season and this continued after he spun at Turn 3, dropping him to 13th from 10th, where he would finish the race.

Jenson Button was the only driver not to make the chequered flag. On lap five, he suffered a brake pedal problem which was soon fixed after the team gave him instructions over the radio. Button was subsequently given a drive-through penalty and later retired from the race due to an oil leak.

Hamilton’s fifth win at the Hungaroring now means he now leads the Drivers’ Championship for the first time this season.
