Nico Rosberg says he is confident his pole time will stand, insisting he slowed down under yellow flags.
The yellow flags were brought out in sector two when Fernando Alonso spun his McLaren at Turn 9, forcing drivers to slow down.
Rosberg was further back when Alonso’s spin occurred, the German therefore arrived at the corner with the Spaniard having recovered his car.
Unsure whether Rosberg lifted or not, questions were raised if the championship leader should be investigated for the incident, but Rosberg is sure he backed off.
“For sure, there were double-waved yellows, but I had a very, very big lift,” he said after claiming his 26th career pole.
“Lost a lot of time as a result and, also slower than on my previous lap in that yellow segment, so I am sure it will be okay.”
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has a different opinion and believes the stewards need to look in detail if Rosberg should be penalised.
“What I need to check is that Rosberg was behind Daniel, and managed to get a purple middle sector,” said Horner.
“With that sort of laptime? That’s down to the stewards to decide.”
