Verstappen: Hungary feels like driving a go-kart

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen gets the impression that the Hungaroring in Budapest gives a driver a go-kart feeling when driving around the lap.

The Dutch sensation has fond memories of the Eastern European circuit, having achieved his best result in F1, up to that point, last season finishing in fourth place.

Verstappen’s father Jos scored his first podium finish in Hungary back in 1994, something the teenager is hoping to repeat this weekend.

“[The] Hungaroring is a great track and Budapest is a really cool city,” the 18-year-old said. “Normally when we arrive it’s pretty warm which is nice.

“I always enjoy driving there because it’s a small track with a big car so it gives a bit of a go-kart feeling, it’s also pretty tough due to all the turns, so you don’t really get a chance to rest and usually end up pretty sweaty in the heat.”

Peter Fox/Getty Images SportHungary is one of the shortest tracks on the calendar at just under three miles long and like Monaco is known for being very limited on overtaking opportunities.

Nevertheless, Verstappen is relishing the prospect of the challenge that awaits, and in particular eyes sector two as a personal highlight around the circuit.

“Sector 2 is my favourite part of the track, it’s all about hitting the apex of one corner right so you are in the right position for the next one.

“If you get it wrong it’s a big time penalty, so you need to be really focused.”
