Vettel welcomes Raikkonen’s re-signing for 2017

Sebastian Vettel says keeping Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari for next season is the correct decision amid criticism over the Finn’s performances in recent seasons.

Recent speculation had linked Force India’s Sergio Perez with a move back to the Scuderia, having been part of their driver programme before joining McLaren in 2013, however, Ferrari confirmed this morning that Raikkonen would remain at Ferrari for a fourth consecutive season.

Vettel believes the harmony in the Ferrari camp and ‘lack of egos’ means the Vettel-Raikkonen pairing is right for Ferrari.

“I would say that Kimi and I have the fewest ego problems in the whole paddock – and that should be good for the team in the long run,” said Vettel in an interview with the official F1 website. “Working in the same direction will pay off. On the track, we both race hard – also against each other, but there is no personal agenda attached to it.”

The German believes despite getting on with all of his previous teammates, the fact Raikkonen comes with ‘no politics’ is a good thing for Ferrari as they look to close the gap on Formula One’s top team Mercedes.

“It is the least complicated. But in the end, I’ve got along with all my teammates. Yes, there have been little issues here and there. But with Kimi there are no politics – and that is good and keeps everything quiet.”
