Hamilton storms to first Monaco win since 2008

Lewis Hamilton has won the 2016 Monaco Grand Prix, in a chaotic race which began under the safety car.

Hamilton benefited from a miscommunication in the Red Bull garage when Ricciardo switched to slicks with the team not ready costing the Australian the potential victory.

Sergio Perez finished third, holding off Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel after jumping him through the stops.

Fernando Alonso drove an impeccable race to finish fifth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg, passing championship leader Nico Rosberg on the run to the chequered flag.

Carlos Sainz, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa rounded out the top 10 positions.

The 78-lap race began under the safety car due to heavy rain, meaning all cars were forced to start on the wet tyres.

There was two early retirements, Jolyon Palmer crashing on the pit straight whilst Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen crashed at the hairpin.

Sauber endured a difficult race after Felipe Nasr was ordered to move out of the way for teammate Marcus Ericsson. The Brazilian failed to oblige leaving Ericsson to make a move into the penultimate corner resulting in a collision forcing both drivers to retire.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Renault’s Kevin Magnussen also failed to make the chequered flag.
