Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton admits his Mercedes W07 was ‘tricky’ to drive during free practice at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Hamilton was seven-tenths off Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg’s benchmark in FP2, ending the session third fastest, also behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.
After a disappointing opening four races to the season, Hamilton will be hoping to fix these issues and begin to close the 43 points gap on championship leader Rosberg.
The 30-year-old admits it was not an easy day for him but is confident he can improve the car ahead of Saturday’s qualifying.
“That wasn’t an easy day for me, I struggled with the car balance through the day and this afternoon in particular it felt really tricky to drive,” he said.
“I had traffic on my quick lap, so the lap times don’t tell the full story, but it’s clear we have plenty of work to do this evening to get the car driving like I want it to.
“But we will get our heads down this evening, work through the data and I’m confident we can pull things around for tomorrow.”
Hamilton has won the Spanish Grand Prix on one previous occasion, in 2014, winning ahead of Mercedes teammate Rosberg and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.
