Vettel ‘furious’ after first lap retirement

Sebastian Vettel was livid after he was hit by Daniil Kvyat twice on the opening lap of the Russian Grand Prix, that led to his retirement.

The German, who had an altercation with the Russian in China, was hit by the Red Bull driver in turns 2 and 3, causing him to fly into the barriers.

Vettel vented his frustration over team radio and after the race felt he was not at fault for the two separate incidents.

“It was fairly clear [what happened] – I just saw the footage,” said Vettel after a second retirement in four races.

“I got a bit hit to spin in Turn 2 and I got a huge hit which turned me around at Turn 3, and I couldn’t avoid hitting the barriers.

“In the end, these things happen but it is harsh. In the end, the race is long. You can make progress in the first lap but you can also end your race, which for me was the case there.

“It was not my fault. There was nothing I could do different.”

Asked if he disliked Kvyat after two incidents in two races, Vettel added: “I don’t dislike him [Kvyat], I think he made a mistake two weeks ago, he did a mistake today.

“It is fairly obvious but it doesn’t help me out because I am not in the race.

“I think there is nothing I could have done different. If anybody needs to talk to somebody it is him.”
