Mercedes have continued their preparations for the new season by going over the 1000 lap barrier in the second day of the second test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg again shared the team’s responsibilities for the day. The two swapped their roles from yesterday’s running, with Hamilton having a chance at lower fuel running on the soft tyres while Rosberg simulated a Melbourne-style race experience.

Hamilton set a lap time of 1:23.622 in the morning having driven 73 laps, before Rosberg took over in the afternoon and completed 91 laps, with a best time of 1:26.298. These 164 laps now mean that the team have completed 1011 laps during testing, the equivalent of just over 15 Spanish Grands Prix.

In their comments at the end of their drives, Hamilton and Rosberg continued to sing the praises of the staff who have created the W07.

Hamilton was pleased to get more running on the soft tyre in the session after previously doing race simulations: “Reliability is our strength at the moment. The strength within the team has grown even further. It’s really motivating for the season. The car was good, quite strong, we did some lower fuel running today but some work needs to be done balance wise. Getting onto the softer tyre was a good experience but we’ve got some work to do still.”

Meanwhile, Rosberg feels that he is now ready to tackle the Australian Grand Prix: “It was another useful day of testing. I did a full Melbourne race simulation and I feel well prepared now for the first race. The team have done a great job so far both in the factory and here on track. The car feels great out there and I haven’t had a major problem yet. I hope this will continue for the last two days.”

The two drivers will continue alternating morning and afternoon sessions, with Rosberg taking the morning session and Hamilton taking part in the afternoon session of tomorrow’s third day in their final preparations for the beginning of the season in Melbourne.
