# Haryanto completes 2016 grid at Manor

Rio Haryanto has been confirmed at Manor for the upcoming Formula One season, joining teammate Pascal Wehrlein at the Banbury-based team.

The Indonesian driver finished fourth in last season’s GP2 championship, amassing 138 points in a season which saw him claim three wins in the Bahrain, Austrian and British sprint races, alongside one fastest lap and two further podiums.

He becomes the first driver from the country to race in F1, while he will be the first Asian driver to take part in a race weekend since Adderly Fong (first practice) and Kamui Kobayashi (race) took part at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend for Sauber and Caterham.

On the announcement of the move, Haryanto stated his delight at the move: “Manor Racing is a team with an exciting vision and ambitious plans. They have produced a great package and I can’t wait to get in the car.

“Melbourne will be a huge moment for me, my country, supporters and fans and I want to thank everyone who’s been with me since I started in single seaters; 2016 is my chance to reward that faith and represent Asia in F1.”

Stephen Fitzpatrick, the owner of Manor Racing, also stated his optimism at the decision: “We are delighted to announce Rio as our second race driver for 2016. Rio’s been racing since he first got into a kart at six years old. He’s tenacious on and off the track and made a big impression on last year’s GP2 battle.

“Rio’s huge following in Indonesia is great for the team and for F1. They are keen to see him on the grid and we’re confident we’ll see him enjoying some exciting battles in the year ahead.”

This announcement means that the Formula One grid is now complete for 2016, with testing beginning on Monday (22 February), during which Haryanto is expected to get his first drive in this year’s MRT05.
