F1 too complicated according to Vettel

Sebastian Vettel has contributed his thoughts regarding the current state of F1, suggesting that “complicated” regulations pose a threat to the popularity of the sport.

F1’s move to technologically pioneering V6 Hybrid powertrains in 2014 has made the sport more relevant. However, with talk of MGU’s and tokens heavily featuring in conversations, the sport has unquestionably become more complex.

The casual fan is harder to attract in the modern age. The rise of the internet and multitude of TV channels means that audiences have much more choice when it comes to Sunday afternoon entertainment. The complicated nature of the sport is often considered as a deterrent for the casual viewer.

On his official website, Sebastian Vettel acknowledged that F1’s complex age is providing an issue regarding fan interest. “I think primarily it should be about the sport and which driver is the fastest,” he stated.

“The car plays a key role today, as it did in the past. But we should not get lost in complicated regulations. The spectators must be able to identify with the car and the technology, as currently it is far too complex. Additionally, the sound is missing.”

Sound is an element of the spectacle that the sport’s governing body has looked to address ahead of the 2016 season. Car’s will have two exhausts this year, with one for the wastegate and another for the turbine. Exhaust packaging and the resultant sound produced will undoubtedly be one of the major talking points during the upcoming winter test schedule.

Ferrari will launch their 2016 challenger – Vettel’s second prancing horse – in an online event on February 19.
