# Todt and Ecclestone granted additional powers

As F1’s power struggle between the governing body and the teams continues, the FIA World Motorsport Council made a key announcement today, granting F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and FIA President Jean Todt the mandate to have a more significant input regarding F1’s current key issues.

Suggestions of cost control and a questionable governance structure have been points of contention of late. Since the introduction of the revolutionary V6 Hybrid powertrains, the balance of power has seemingly shifted to the pre-eminent engine manufacturers and away from the governing body.

Questions of whether the democracy within the sport, which sees the team’s having a significant influence over regulations, have also surfaced throughout the year.

An [official statement on the FIA website](https://www.fia.com/news/fia-announces-world-motor-sport-council-decisions-0) read: “The World Motor Sport Council approved, by a near unanimous number (just one vote against), a mandate for the FIA President, Jean Todt and the Representative of the Commercial Rights Holder, Bernie Ecclestone to make recommendations and decisions regarding a number of pressing issues in Formula One such as governance, Power Units and cost reduction.”

The statement also indicated that Jean Todt and Bernie Ecclestone have targeted the end of January as the time by which they hope to have developed conclusions to solve these big issues. It will then be intriguing to see the response among teams to their recommendations.
