Malja returns to GP2 in Bahrain

Gustav Malja will return to the GP2 Series at this weekend’s stand-alone meeting in Bahrain with Rapax as replacement for the injured Robert Visoiu.

The 20-year-old from Malmö, Sweden, competed in this season’s Formula Renault 3.5 Series before making his GP2 début for Trident at Spa-Francorchamps in August. He finished the weekend with a top 10 result in the feature race.

Visoiu’s injury is as yet unspecified, but Rapax team boss Andrea Bergamini is confident that Malja can fill the Romanian’s shoes with aplomb.

In the team’s press release, Bergamini said: “We were sad to hear about the injury occurred to Robert and we wish him a prompt return on-track. In the two final events of the season at Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, we will have the chance to welcome a young rookie like Gustav Malja.”

The Bahrain race weekend will serve as a replacement for the cancelled German Grand Prix support race. The team have yet to confirm whether or not Visoiu will be available for the season finale in Abu Dhabi on 28/29 November.

Malja, a former ADAC Formel Masters runner-up has also raced in FIA European Formula 3 in the Pau Grand Prix with EuroInternational, registering two 25th places and a retirement
