FP3 pace was better than expected – Bottas

Valtteri Bottas admits the pace shown by Williams in third practice was ‘better than expected’.

Williams have struggled for wet weather pace since the introduction of the V6 engines in 2014.

Valtteri Bottas was fourth fastest in FP3 while teammate Felipe Massa was tenth.

FP3 was a crucial session for all the teams as if qualifying is unable to go ahead later today, the FIA will use the FP3 results to determine grid positions. This would mean Bottas would line-up third while Massa would start eighth due to Vettel and Raikkonen’s penalties.

“We had a good session this morning. We have learned a lot and improved the performance in the wet since yesterday. The tyres started to work reasonably well.

Both qualifying and the race on Sunday is expected to be wet thus Williams will be hoping to carry their improved wet weather speed over into Sunday.

“Finishing fourth was much better than we would expect in the wet. We have to be ready for tomorrow, it will be busy, but hopefully we can qualify well.”
