United States GP Qualifying delayed due to heavy rain

Qualifying for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas has been delayed by 30 minutes due to heavy rain.

Rain has been constant in Texas today and is expected to remain until 0100 local time.

Free practice three was also affected by heavy rain but went ahead with all 20 drivers setting lap times.

FIA race director Charlie Whiting decided it was too wet for qualifying to go ahead thus the session has been delayed by 30 minutes. Qualifying will now begin at 1430 local time (1930 BST) if no more delays take place.

If qualifying is unable to take place today, two options are open to the FIA. Qualifying could be run tomorrow morning, before the race, which happened at the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix or the FP3 results can be used to decide grid positions.

Update at 1920 BST: Qualifying has been delayed for another 30 minutes (till 2000 BST). Increasingly unlikely qualifying will take place today.

Update at 1950 BST: Qualifying has been delayed for another 30 minutes (till 2030 BST).

This article will be updated accordingly once more information is released by the FIA regarding when qualifying will start.
