Valtteri Bottas says Williams is still struggling in wet conditions as they tried to improve their wet weather pace in first practice in Austin.
Opening practice at the Circuit of the Americas began with the majority of the teams running on the wet tyres before moving onto the intermediate tyre. FP2 was a complete washout as heavy rain and lightning meant the FIA was forced to cancel the session.
Williams have struggled in wet conditions over the past two seasons and Bottas believes they are no near improving in this department.
“We managed to improve the balance of the car a little bit, but the main problem remains that we lack overall grip in the wet,” he told ESPN F1.
“We had quite heavy front tyre graining today – I don’t know if the other teams had the same issue – and that was quite a big problem for us. I just about managed to get myself into the top ten, but the gap to the quickest cars in the wet is still big, so we need to find some big improvements for the future.”
