Massa delighted with ‘fight back’ after disappointing qualifying

Williams’ Felipe Massa says he was delighted to ‘fight back’ after a disappointing qualifying which saw him qualify only 15th while teammate Bottas put it on the second row in third.

The Brazilian recovered from 15th on the grid to fourth and put in some outstanding overtaking manoeuvres on Fernando Alonso and Daniil Kvyat.

With several retirements, Massa was the beneficiary and came home in fourth place.

The 34-year old admits he struggled to pass other cars when on the prime tyre but once he switched to the super-soft, he found the pace of his Williams to be much stronger which allowed him to make further progress in the race.

“It was a good result for me today and we managed to do well to fight back from a disappointing qualifying yesterday. I lost a bit of time behind slower cars at the beginning of the race because I was on harder tyres than those around me, but the pace was very good on the supersofts at the end.

“This allowed me to close up and be in a position to collect more points on the final lap due to the incidents up ahead.”
