Russian GP result a ‘nice surprise’ – Alonso

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso says that having both drivers finish in the top 10 in Sochi is a ‘nice surprise’ for the team. Even though Alonso crossed the line in 10th place, he was docked a position due to a 5-second penalty for corner cutting.

The Spaniard told them that he hopes his team can improve at Austin on October 25th.

“We’ll now hope for more performance at the next race, in the USA. It’ll be tough, and we’ll have to remain realistic, but I’m definitely happy with today’s result.”

Alonso has said that the car’s performance and lack of tyre degradation was a defining factor in the team’s performance.

“The car performed very well in the race – I think we were able to look after the tyres a little bit better than the cars around us, and, on an afternoon where every little bit helped, we made the most of that.”
