Williams driver Valtteri Bottas says it was a surprise that he out-qualified both Ferrari and Red Bull drivers for the Japanese Grand Prix.
Williams struggled to match Ferrari and Red Bull in Singapore, a circuit which did not suit the FW37.
In the official FIA press conference after qualifying, Bottas admitted it was a nice surprise to out-qualify both Ferrari and Red Bull drivers in Suzuka.
“Well, it’s very good for us obviously. It’s a very different track to Singapore and we always knew it’s going to be better for our car. I think we came in for this weekend, for the dry, with a good set-up already, so we didn’t really have that much work to do from practice to qualifying.
After rain disrupted Friday practice, it was a busy morning for all of the teams.
The Finn stressed the importance of qualifying well due to the difficulties of overtaking in Japan.
“Today was one the most difficult Saturdays we’ve had, because there was rain on Friday and here qualifying is very important, so good surprise.”
