Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz admits topping opening practice for the Japanese Grand Prix was ‘something special’.
The 21-year old was fastest in first practice ahead of ahead of Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat and Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg. This was the first time Sainz was fastest in a session in his Formula One career.
The Spaniard has been plagued with reliability problems all season but scored points in the last race Singapore, finishing ninth behind teammate Max Verstappen.
“To finish FP1 on top was also something special, as it’s the first time I lead a Formula 1 practice session. The track is amazing, very challenging, and even more in the wet! I had a lot of fun out there and I hope we can continue like this the rest of the weekend.
Sainz was happy with the pace showed in practice and is confident he has learned the track ahead of free practice three and then qualifying on Saturday.
“Overall it was a good day and there are a lot of positives to take from today. Even though it’s been raining all day and we haven’t been able to complete any laps in dry conditions, I managed to learn the track quickly and showed some good pace.”
