# Sainz fastest in wet Suzuka first practice

Carlos Sainz Jr. set the pace in a wet opening practice in Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Rain meant only 12 drivers set a time while the remaining eight only completed out laps as they did not to risk crashing their cars on a tricky Suzuka Circuit.

We had to wait over an hour for the first flying lap to be posted as the Toro Rosso duo circulated on the wet tyres.

Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat came closest to Sainz’s time but eventually finished half a second off. Nico Rosberg was third fastest ahead of Vettel and championship leader Hamilton.

Max Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa, Marcus Ericsson and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top ten positions.

Eight drivers opted not to set a flying lap – Ricciardo, Perez, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Maldonado, Palmer, Stevens, and Rossi.

Wet weather is forecasted for second practice meaning there will be limited running once more.
