Rosberg on top in opening practice in Singapore

Nico Rosberg set the pace in opening practice for the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

After a disappointing Italian Grand Prix, retiring on the penultimate lap due to an engine failure, Rosberg looked strong and go to grips with the street circuit very quickly.

Mercedes teammate and championship leader Lewis Hamilton set the second fastest time, three-tenths slower than Rosberg.

Red Bull are expected to perform better in Singapore and Ricciardo demonstrated this expectation by setting the third fastest time, ahead of the Ferrari duo of Vettel and Raikkonen.

Williams’ Valtteri Bottas was sixth fastest ahead of Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Sainz and Maldonado.

McLaren hope for a stronger weekend in Singapore after two disappointing races at Spa and Monza. Alonso set the eleventh fastest time of the session.

Felipe Massa and Daniil Kvyat struggled to match their teammates while rookie Alexander Rossi, who is making his Formula One debut this weekend, was slowest, less than a tenth slower than teammate Stevens.

The American crashed with three minutes to go, resulting in a red flag.
