Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his desire to having a Grand Prix in Africa.
The continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since the early 1990s and Bernie Ecclestone is hoping Formula One can return sometime in the near future.
Speaking to South Africa’s Eyewitness News, Ecclestone reaffirmed his view on Formula One coming back to Africa however, admits there has not been a viable proposal put forward.
“If somebody sits in front of me today, with a pen, and wants to sign a contract there can be a race next year,” the 84-year-old told EWN.
“I think it’s really a case of someone getting behind this and saying, ‘we’re going to make it happen’ because unless somebody does that it will just bumble on like it is with a lot of interest, and when it really comes down to it nobody is really making the effort to do anything.”

The last race to take place in African was in 1993, dubbed the ‘South African Grand Prix’ at the Kyalami Racing Circuit.
Cape Town seems the most likely the location, if an African Grand Prix was going to materialise, however, the lack of FIA Grade one circuits on the continent mean substantial investment would be required if the pinnacle of motorsport was to return to the world’s second largest continent.
