Verstappen “had to go for it”

Toro Rosso driver, Max Verstappen, provided viewers with many overtakes at the Belgian GP as he fought back from 18th to finish eighth.

“It was a great achievement to start from so far back and finish eighth in the end! My pace was very strong and I enjoyed the overtaking, so we can be very happy about today’s race,” the 17-year-old said after the race.

Max’s passes included spectacular overtakes on Fernando Alonso and Felipe Nasr at Blanchimont.

“I really enjoyed it and even if some of the overtakes were a bit risky, when you start from so far back you have to go for it if you want to move forward.”

He passed Valtteri Bottas with a late-braking move at Les Combes but out-braked himself at the same place trying to overtake Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap.

“It wasn’t an easy start to the weekend, but we managed to do a great job in the end and I would like to thank the team for the big effort and my home crowd for the support, we can all be really happy with today’s P8!”

Three points from eighth place mean Max stays ahead of Sergio Perez by one point in the Driver’s Championship, in 10th and 11th places. Toro Rosso teammate, Carlos Sainz retired from the race before it started – helping Force India to increase their gap ahead of Toro Rosso, who lie 7th, to 14 points.
