Haas F1 contender Alexander Rossi broke his 2015 race win duct with a measured drive to take the sprint race win at Spa-Francorchamps.
Rossi came under pressure from King and Vandoorne, but he kept his cool to take his first win of the season.
Racing Engineering teammate Jordan King lead from pole position into turn one, however, a mistake at Les Combes cost him the race lead to Rossi. King was unable to challenge Rossi but came home in second to take his maiden GP2 podium.
Championship leader Stoffel Vandoorne drove an impressive race to go from eighth on the grid all the way up to the 3rd after 12 laps, The Belgium driver challenged the Racing engineering duo but after the virtual SC period, caused by Arthur Pic spinning into the gravel, he locked up heavily at the bus stop chicane and lost any chance of challenging the top two and dropped into the clutches of Evans.
Mitch Evans pressured the championship leader for third and completed the move on the final lap of the race to take only his 2nd podium of the season.
His teammate Artem Markelov drove a fantastic race to recover from a poor start to finish fifth thanks to numerous DRS overtakes to complement his brilliant maiden podium he scored yesterday. Sirotkin stole sixth place from Berthon in the final corner of the track who had to settle for seventh after starting second.
Alex Lynn battled back from a poor feature race to take the final point in eighth just ahead of Canamasas who once again narrowly missed out on points.
Haryanto will be disappointed to walk away from Belgium with zero points after finishing in tenth today ahead of Leal who went backwards all race. Last year’s feature race winner Marciello finished twelfth. Rowland, Pic and Gasly all failed to see the chequered flag.
Rossi slightly closes the gap on Vandoorne as the GP2 field heads to Monza in 2 weeks. The Belgian can secure the Drivers’ title at Monza if he out scores Rossi by 41 points.
