After finishing fifth at the Belgian Grand Prix, Sergio Perez says he is already looking forward to Monza.
Speaking after the race, the 25-year-old explained: “Fifth place and ten points is a good result, but we just lacked the pace to really fight for the podium today.”
The Mexican briefly took the lead of the race after starting from fourth place on the grid. The result means he stands 11th in the Driver’s Championship with 25 points – one more than his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, who broke down after the first formation lap after reporting a loss of power.
“My start was very strong and I was close to taking the lead on lap one when I was alongside Lewis after Eau Rouge. I settled into a good rhythm, but we had very high degradation on the option tyres in the first two stints. It was a bit better on the medium, although we struggled in the middle sector with our low-downforce setup, and that hurt my pace.”
The Force India’s low-downforce setup showed with the fastest straight line speeds of any team in qualifying, followed closely by the Mercedes duo. Sergio hopes this can help them again similarly in two weeks time.
“I’m already looking forward to the next race in Monza, which is another track where I think we can be competitive.”
