Fernando Alonso admits McLaren are thinking about using two Honda engines this weekend at the Belgium Grand Prix.
Honda have introduced a new and improved engine for this weekend’s race at Spa-Francorchamps, they expect to be on level with Ferrari in terms of pure engine performance.
Alonso scored his best result of the season last time out in Hungary with a fifth-placed finish however, the season as a whole has been disappointing for McLaren.
“We are thinking about using two new engines. One on Friday and the other on Saturday, which will mean we’ll be relegated to the back of the grid.” Alonso told Spanish publication Marca.
Alonso, who has never won the Belgium Grand Prix, admitted McLaren will be using this weekend’s race as a test event.
“We’re still considering this as a test. We’re heading in the right direction and these are important steps for next year.
The two-time world champion played down the ban on drivers receiving assistance from engineers over team radio in regards to the start procedure.
“I don’t think the change is very important and it won’t affect the drivers too much. In fact, we don’t speak much in the warm-up lap” added Alonso.
The Spaniard is renowned as being one of the best starters on the Formula One grid, by giving the driver more control over the start procedure, it will demonstrate the talent differential between drivers when it comes to the start of races.
