Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel led the way in the early stages of Q2 however proceedings were halted after Alonso’s McLaren stopped in the final sector which resulted in a red flag.
Late laps from Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean saw them scrape through into the pole position shoot-out however Sainz and Maldonado were unable to match their team-mates efforts.
After the first runs in Q3, Hamilton led Rosberg, Vettel, Ricciardo and Raikkonen. The Mercedes had yet to use a new set of soft tyres at this stage.
