Romain Grosjean is targeting fifth in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix after the Frenchman enjoyed a strong first day at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Grosjean finished an impressive third in FP1 and was once again in the top ten, setting the seventh fastest time in FP2 – two places behind Lotus team-mate Pastor Maldonado.
“It was a good day,” Grosjean told ESPN
“It was quite surprising to be P3 this morning but the afternoon confirmed we are looking in good shape with P7, the car feels great. Monaco was already a step forward because it was not a track where we were expecting to be as good as we were, but here is more in our direction.
There has been a lot of positivity today between the two cars that we can try to get a good result tomorrow.”
Grosjean says Lotus’ aim is to beat Williams, who appear to be their nearest rivals in Canada.
“I think realistically we can try to give some hard time to the Williams, if not beat them. I’m sure there will be four cars quicker than us, but if we do manage to be close to the Williams or fight them, then it will be very good. We are fighting the Williams for P5 so if we can achieve something like P5 then it would be really good.”
