Toto Wolff has apologised to Lewis Hamilton after a team-error robbed the Brit of an almost certain Monaco GP win.

The Mercedes Executive Director told F1.com that the team misjudged the pace of the safety car: “We have to check what speed the safety car was doing. But yes he closed up with the safety car and lost time.”, which cost Lewis the second he came out behind Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

Wolff admitted: “The final decision [to pit] was made 50 meters before the pit lane entry.”

“I have apologised. This one clearly goes on the team. Lewis is a great driver and I am sure he will understand that it is human nature that errors are made sometimes. That’s it.”

Lewis told BBC Sport: “This is a race that has been very close to my heart for many years. It was a great feeling to have that gap in the race. I didn’t even have to push that much, I could have had double that lead if I had pushed. You live to fight another day.”

The Brit still leads the championship by 10 points going into Canada.
