Lewis Hamilton was fastest in opening practice for the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen.
The streets of Monte Carlo provide the drivers with the toughest challenge of the year which was demonstrated with many drivers sliding and out-braking into Sainte Devote.
Mercedes dominated proceedings from the off as Hamilton and Rosberg exchanged fastest lap times.
Rosberg clipped the wall at Tabac however it was only a minor collision.
A late lap saw Daniel Ricciardo improve to third fastest ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in fourth.
Carlos Sainz was fifth fastest ahead of Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado.
Kimi Raikkonen was seventh fastest albeit six tenths slower than team-mate Sebastian Vettel.
Rosberg, Massa and Alonso were a second shy of Hamilton’s fastest time.
Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat set the eleventh fastest time ahead of the Lotus’ Romain Grosjean.
Sauber struggled to get to grips with the Monte Carlo street circuit and were down in sixteenth and eighteenth respectively.
The Manor pairing of Stevens and Mehri were slowest once again.
