Hockenheim has now ruled out a German Grand Prix at their venue in 2015.
This news comes after Bernie Ecclestone announced back in January that the Hockenheim circuit would host the 2015 German Grand Prix because the Nurburgring location could not fund the event.
Speaking to German Media, BILD, the circuit Boss, Georg Seiler said “We have no more hope that the Formula 1 takes place here. We have done in the last few years everything to make the fans happy.”
“The time has expired to organize a race here. Otherwise, the quality of the event would have suffered.”
Attendance figures have been steadily declining ever since the retirement of 7-time world champion, Michael Schumacher. Last year, just 52,000 half-filled the 120,000 capacity to see Nico Rosberg win his home race with the Mercedes outfit.
Bernie Ecclestone responeded “That surprises me. Perhaps it is because the Germans have always supported Michael, were accustomed to him and miss him now.”
Article 5.6 of the sporting regulations require the event holders to give at least three months notice for cancellation with the punishment of exclusion from the following years calendar. The organisers look to have met this deadline so a 2016 race at Hockenheim is possible.
