Nico Rosberg’s second place finish at Austin guaranteed that the title would go to the final race. His win at Interlagos meant that we could finally know just how the points system is going to work at Abu Dhabi – and how the double points rule affects the result.

Going into the title deciding final race, this is how the title will be decided:

**Hamilton finishes in the top 2 –** Hamilton will win the title regardless of Rosberg’s position\
**Rosberg fails to finish in the top 5 –** Hamilton will win the title\
**Rosberg wins with Hamilton 3rd or lower –** Rosberg wins the title\
**Rosberg 2nd, Hamilton lower than 5th** – Rosberg wins\
**Rosberg 3rd, Hamilton lower than 6th –** Rosberg wins\
**Rosberg 4th, Hamilton lower than 8th –** Rosberg wins\
**Rosberg 5th, Hamilton lower than 9th –** Rosberg wins

If the race didn’t have double points, the situation would be very different.

Rosberg would have to finish in the top 2, whilst Hamilton would only need to finish 6th to be guaranteed the title.

If Rosberg won, he would need Hamilton to finish lower than 6th and if Rosberg finished second, he’d need Lewis not to score.
