It has been confirmed that Marcus Ericsson is going to be in Formula One in 2015 with the Sauber F1 team.
Ericsson is in his first season of Formula One with Caterham, but after the team entered administration, rumours started to speculate as to where their drivers, Ericsson and Kamui Kobayashi would end up.
It was hinted the past few days that Ericsson may be off to Sauber, as he travelled to this weekend’s US Grand Prix, despite not driving.
After the confirmation, the Swede said: “Fresh from a very turbulent week, I was suddenly given my best early Christmas present ever,”
“Sauber has put its trust in me for 2015, and it makes me proud, as Sauber is known to be one of the best teams in developing young drivers.
“It will be a great challenge. I will give my very best to develop both as a driver, and to be part of the challenge to put Sauber back closer to the front where it belongs.”
Whilst it is unclear who out of Sauber’s current drivers will lose their seat, Sauber Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn said that the team are excited about the prospect of Ericsson racing with them next season.
“We have got to know Marcus as a highly motivated driver,” added Kaltenborn. “He did not have an easy rookie season this year in Formula One, however, he kept calm and improved continuously, mainly in the last races. We are convinced that signing Marcus can give the team a fresh impetus.”
It is possible that both Esteban Gutierrez and Adrian Sutil could lose their current drives with Sauber, with reserve driver Giedo van der Garde fairly confident he will remain with the team next season – as a possible race driver.
