The FIA has confirmed that the qualifying format for the US Grand Prix will be slightly different due to the absence of Caterham and Marussia.
Instead of the usual 6 cars being eliminated from Q1 and Q2, only 4 will be lost from each. This will keep the top 10 shootout Q3 session as normal.
It is already known that Sebastian Vettel will miss qualifying due to his power unit penalty. He needs a sixth of each component this weekend, which guarantees a pit lane start and therefore makes competing in qualifying irrelevant. Because of this, a fight between the Lotuses and Saubers is expected for Q1 – unless further drivers are forced to withdraw.
