Nico Rosberg has said that he is very proud to make history with his Mercedes team, after clinching their first constructors championship after Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix and recovering to finish second; after a first lap error.

Rosberg tried to take the lead from his team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the second corner, before locking both front tires and pitting at the end of the opening lap due to heavy vibrations; as a result of the error.

Recovering from 20th place however, Rosberg managed to secure second place ahead of the ever present Williams of Valtteri Bottas.

After crossing the finishing line, Rosberg said on the team radio: “Sorry guys that was very unnecessary, but thanks for the car and helping me to recover from that.”

During the podium interviews, Rosberg congratulated the Brackley based team for all their success this season.

“Half of me is extremely disappointed that I messed up, but the other half I am really, really happy because everybody in the team deserves it so much,” says Rosberg.

“We have secured the most important title of the season and I am very happy and that’s why I can still smile.

“It’s history for us, and I feel very proud to be a part of it. It’s a beautiful day.”
