Fernando Alonso has given a big hint as to what his 2015 season holds. The Spaniard talking to the media after Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix stated that his 2015 drive is almost secured and it will not feature power from a Mercedes power unit.
Recent rumours have suggested that the double world champion was trying to get in with newly crowned constructors champions, Mercedes, despite both their drivers having contracts for next season.
Speaking to Germany’s Sky at Sochi, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: “This is all b******t,”
“We have a driver lineup for next year,” he said, referring to Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
“We just don’t want to go into contract negotiations (with Hamilton beyond 2015) during this intense phase, which is why there are these rumours.
“But we have said that at the end of the season, we will get together and renew the contract,” Wolff insisted.
After Sebastian Vettel confirmed that he was leaving Red Bull during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend, all suggestions pointed towards the German going to Ferrari and almost certainly meant Alonso would be leaving.
The team that looks most certain to get Alonso, will be McLaren; who are switching to Honda power for 2015. Whilst nothing has been confirmed, sources in the paddock believe that Alonso has signed a deal with the team – possibly leaving current drivers, Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen without a drive for next season.
Speaking to the US’ NBC after a tough race, Alonso said that his team for 2015 would not have a Mercedes power unit in the back.
Alonso is quoted by Sky as saying: “My future is already set,”
“Or already set in my mind for some months.
“Now we are finalising everything,” Alonso revealed. “You need to be patient, you need to wait a little bit.
“I cannot say anything until everything is completely done but it’s good and I will do the best for my future and the best for the future of Ferrari because it is the team that I love.
“When you know it you will say ‘it was so obvious you will do that’,” he added.
