FIA race director Charlie Whiting says that the reason behind the newly-placed tarmac on the outskirts of the Parabolica corner on the Monza track ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix is for improving safety.
Replacing gravel traps at corners with extra run-off areas has been the norm in recent seasons, with fans being left frustrated with the undermining of driver challenges that they result in and shared similiar emotions with Monza’s famous final corner being the next to be accompanied by extra tarmac.
When discussing it however, Whiting said he was in support of the recent decision and informed that the drivers have lead the way in the call to make the changes and ensure the sport is adhering to its high safety standards.
“About 35 per cent of the gravel has been replaced.” said Whiting, and added that: “This has been requested for safety reasons by the FIA and the drivers, just as it has been at virtually every other circuit that F1 races on.
“Of course we know that it is not as punishing to a driver who leaves the track but that is the price that we pay for much improved safety: a price both the drivers and I believe is worth paying.”
