Rosberg storms to pole in tricky conditions – Qualifying Report

Nico Rosberg will start from pole position for the 2014 Belgium Grand Prix ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Fernando Alonso will start fourth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen.

Spa-Francorshamps is renowned for its wet weather and changeable conditions and today was no different. A heavy rain storm prior to the first part of qualifying saturated the circuit leaving many teams confused on which tyres to use.

Majority of the drivers opted to use the green marked intermediates whilst Adrian Sutil and the Williams duo decided to use the wet tyres for their opening runs in Q1. Nico Hülkenberg completed his flying laps towards the end of the session which proved costly as the German was unable to set a time quick enough to progress into the second part of qualifying. Teammate Sergio Perez struggled however set a time quick enough to progress.

After crashing in FP1, Pastor Maldonado continued to struggle and spun at the bus-stop chicane, he failed to make the cut along with Max Chilton and Esteban Gutiérrez. On his Formula One debut, André Lotterer out-qualified teammate Marcus Ericsson by one second.

The second part of qualifying was more of the same with many drivers struggling with conditions. Mercedes continued to show their dominance with Hamilton 1.8 seconds clear of Fernando Alonso in third. Jules Bianchi reached the second part of qualifying once again however he ended up sixteenth behind the Lotus of Romain Grosjean.

Late laps from Magnussen, Button and Vettel meant they progressed into the pole position shootout at the expense of Toro Rosso duo and Sergio Perez.

In Q3, Rosberg’s first effort was 2.5 seconds quicker than his nearest challenger Sebastian Vettel. Title rival Lewis Hamilton made two individual mistakes at La Source which ensured he would not claim his first pole position since the Spanish Grand Prix.

Ricciardo made a mistake on his final run at Blanchimont however the Australian managed to set the fourth quickest time of the session. Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Jenson Button complete the top ten.

The initial forecast for the race tomorrow is dry however anything can happen at Spa.
