Sauber team principal and CEO Monisha Kalterborn has urged her team to show some “more courage” if they are to improve on their current showing this season.
The-Swiss based team are enduring their worst season in its 11 year Formula 1 history, with the outfit yet to open their points account within the first 11 races of this year and lie a lowly 10th in the constructors championship.
Their last points finish dates back to the final race of last season in Brazil and since then finishing 11th is the best either Esteban Gutierrez or newly-joined Adrian Sutil have managed.
When talking to Autosport, Kalterborn believed that the lack of performance from the car is resource-orientated and hinted at taking a bolder strategy with the way in which the team develop of the car in a bid to boost their position.
“In the development we did, maybe we have to change certain ways of thinking and get more aggressive,” Kalterborn said to Autosport and added that: “Maybe [we need to] have more courage to go in different ways.”
“I think there is potential in this car, which we have to unlock by understanding the data better, and understanding our car.
“We clearly have the tools, we have to work on our resources and when that’s in place we need more courage to go out and do something else.”
Kalterborn also admitted that Sauber striving to be more independent from big teams, much like engine and technical partner Ferrari, was a turn in the wrong direction.
“We don’t depend that much on working together with other teams; we do things ourselves. And this time we’ve not taken the right way.” confessed Kalterborn.
“That’s where we have to maybe change our ways of thinking more, because they are historical. Maybe with all of the demands and complexities on the car it can make sense to, here and there, co-operate with another team.”
