Felipe Massa says he would pass on the highs and lows experienced during his time at Williams to other teams should he switch teams in the future, including a return to his former team Ferrari.
The team from Maranello have had a trying campaign so far, with the team winless and have only two podiums to show for their efforts this season as well as some 52 points off their total in the constructors championship at this point last season. While Massa, who left the Scuderia for Williams after last season, has seen his team make a return to the front of the field with team-mate Valtteri Bottas claiming three podiums and Massa leading the team’s first front-row lockout in qualifying since 2003.
In an interview with Italian Motorsport magazine Autosprint, the Brazilian was asked whether his former team can learn from his time spent away from Ferrari should he be approached for a return and Massa replied: “Yes, but I won’t say,” and added: “I don’t know if it will happen, but if one day if I had to change teams again, I would take all of the experience that I have from Williams”
Amid the team’s return to competitive ways and his first pole position since the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, Massa has had his season hit with various misfortunes, particularly through first-lap incidents, but believes that the car’s competitiveness and his hunger for strong results takes priority.
“The important thing is that we have a competitive car, and that I am competitive myself. That’s what I care about.” said the 33-year-old.
In the eyes of the team’s Chief Technical Officer Pat Symonds, Williams are only bettered by Mercedes and Red Bull on raw performance and Massa acknowledged that their speed wasn’t solely down to having the superior Mercedes power unit.
“Now we are competitive in the other areas too,” Massa added. “It took a while but we did it. And there is still so much to improve,”
