McLaren to remove FRIC suspension

McLaren have chagooonfirmed they are set to remove its FRIC suspension system for the upcoming German Grand Prix.

FRIC (Front and Rear interconnected suspension) is a system used by majority of the teams. It is used to help stabilise a car through corners by keeping its ride height as consistent as possible. It also believed that the concept is at a advanced stage where it is able to control a car’s roll from left to right.

The FIA race director Charlie Whiting feels after evaluating the system that they may breech the regulations regarding movable aerodynamic devices. The FIA have offered to delay the ban of FRIC from Formula One until the start of 2015 but that would require agreement from all of the teams which seems unlikely.

The FIA have yet to publish any official information regarding the FRIC situation ahead of the German Grand Prix however McLaren have revealed that they are not to run the FRIC suspension system on both cars.

A McLaren spokesman told Autosport: “McLaren does not currently intend to run a FRIC suspension system at the German Grand Prix, McLaren will comply with the FIA’s rulings on the matter.”

It remains to be seen whether other teams follow McLaren however it is likely they will remove their FRIC suspension systems to avoid protest.
