Former teammate a
nd fellow countryman Jenson Button has stated that if Lewis Hamilton’s head is in the right place then the 2008 World Champion would be ‘unbeatable’ in his quest for his second driver’s title.
Hamilton currently sits four points behind teammate Nico Rosberg in the race for the title. Many people argue that Hamilton has the raw speed whilst Rosberg is more intelligent. Button who was Hamilton’s teammate for three seasons has questioned this view.
In an interview with Weekend Sports Breakfast he said: “People say Lewis Hamilton is quicker but Nico Rosberg is more intelligent, I don’t know though, I know how quick Lewis is and if his head is in the right place he will be unbeatable [in the title race].”
Button is confident that McLaren will soon be back to challenging for race wins after a disappointing two seasons which has seen Button finish on the podium on one occasion.
“It’s been a very tough year to be fair, very tough. We are not where we are use to being at the front. McLaren is use to fighting up the front with the other top teams. But this year that hasn’t been the case. But we are getting strong and the British Grand Prix showed that. We qualified third in tricky conditions and just, almost got a podium – but didn’t quite. It was an amazing weekend and so much support from the fans. It was a very, very special race”
Despite having the best power unit in the form of the Mercedes, they currently sit sixth in the Constructors’ Championship behind fellow Mercedes users Williams and Force India. With a move to Honda in 2015, Button is confident that McLaren are on track to return to the front of the grid.
“We will win races. It is just a matter of time. It is very frustrating [not being able to win] because when you have won races before and a championship, nothing else is good enough, but we’re on the right track and that’s the most important thing.”
