Sergio Perez has stated that more Formula 1 teams need to step up to the mark to try and challenge Mercedes at the front of the field, to stop the sport losing fans.
Over the past four years, Formula 1 has been greatly dominated by Red Bull Racing, but in 2014 it is now the turn of Mercedes. Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and championship leader Nico Rosberg, have won all but one race this season after a mechanical fault on both cars cost them an almost certain 1-2 finish at the Canadian GP.
Former McLaren driver Perez, believes that all these years of the sport being dominated by a single team is dragging fans away and nullifying the excitement that F1 has to offer.
Perez has said that if more than one team are to win in Formula 1, then it may bring the attraction that has got the sport a worldwide fan-base, back once again.
“I think Formula 1 is looking for a way to make things more entertaining, and I think the best way to make it entertaining is to give opportunities to more teams to fight for victories,” the Mexican told GPUpdate.net.
“We all know who’s going to win on Sunday, 99 per cent. Of course, every single driver would love to be in the position of Lewis and Nico. But as a fan I don’t like that because it gets boring.
“I like to see a couple of teams fighting for the victory, and I think you can do that by reducing the budget gap [between the teams] and also establishing a bit more the rules and what you can do on the cars.”
He continued by saying: “In the future it would be great to have Force India, Williams, Sauber… fighting against a team like Mercedes.
Force India have never won a race in Formula 1, but have two podium finishes courtesy of Giancarlo Fisichella at the Belgian GP in 2009 and also Sergio Perez at the 2014 Bahrain GP. Only once have they started on pole position, but Perez has said he doesn’t expect Force India to be fighting for World Championships in the near future.
“I’m not saying that Force India has to be a World Champion, but it would be great if they had the opportunity to at least fight for a big result, such as one race victory or something like that.
“It’s a big boost, not only for the team but also for Formula 1, to have these kind of results.”
