Sainz Jr linked with Caterham

Latest report173741362_10 (1)s floating around the paddock suggest Carlos Sainz Jr is set to replace Kamui Kobayashi for the remainder of the season.

The 19-year old currently leads the Formula Renault 3.5 Championship and is next in line for a drive at Red Bull’s junior team Toro Rosso.

In the last week, Caterham have undergone changes within the management system which have led to suggestions that they are ready to alter their driver line-up in a bid to reclaim tenth in the Constructors Championship.

A move to Caterham would be beneficial for the young Spaniard as it would give him important race mileage ahead of a potential move to Toro Rosso in 2015. Sainz Jr would still be able to compete in the Renault 3.5 series as none of the remaining races clash with the Formula One calendar.

Red Bull also supply Caterham with gearboxes and reports suggest they are willing to reduce the costs of supplying them if Sainz Jr was to be placed at Caterham.

Sainz Jr told Spanish newspaper AS: ”Yes, it is true that there have been talks with [Caterham], but there is nothing confirmed,”

“It doesn’t change anything for me because my goal remains the same: to be at Toro Rosso in the future. If for that to happen I pass through Caterham then I do so happily. It has been possible to race this year [in FR3.5], but Red Bull is the one who decides. They and Caterham must also benefit and reach an agreement.”
