Daniel Ricciardo set the pace in Formula 1’s first practice session of the weekend in Bahrain, with current drivers’ championship leader Sebastian Vettel in fourth.

Red Bull Racing’s Ricciardo wasn’t in the mix during the beginning of the first practice session of the weekend, but in the final 30 minutes set a lap-time of 1m31.060s to go ahead of everyone else.

His team-mate Max Verstappen however was an early casualty, running into issues and going slowly around the track after exiting the pits at the beginning of the session.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was second in the session with Finnish compatriot Kimi Raikkonen putting Ferrari in third and making it three different teams in the top three. Raikkonen was just under four-tenths of a second behind Ricciardo’s fast lap, while his team-mate Sebastian Vettel was not too far behind in fourth.

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fifth. Hamilton was over a second off Ricciardo’s lap and eight-tenths off the time set by Vettel in fourth.

Romain Grosjean went sixth, being the fastest driver of the session to have at least one stint on the supersoft tyres. With team-mate Kevin Magnussen in ninth, Haas looks to put in a performance similar to what they accomplished two weeks ago in Melbourne.

In seventh was Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso, powered by Honda this season. Gasly put in 26 laps during the 90 minutes, the joint third most out of the 20 drivers on the grid. His team-mate Brendon Hartly was down in 16th.

Carlos Sainz Jr and Nico Hulkenberg for Renault sandwiched Magnussen on the timesheets, ending the session in eighth and 10th respectively.
