Laaksonen earns GP3 promotion with Campos
Euroformula Open driver Simo Laaksonen will race for Campos Racing in GP3 this year.
Laaksonen switched to EF Open in 2017 after three years racing in national F4 championships.
The 19-year-old Finn ended his maiden EF Open sixth in the drivers’ championship with two podiums to his name, he was also Campos’ highest placed driver.
Campos ran Laaksonen on all three days of GP3’s post-season test in Abu Dhabi. His best time came on the morning of the final day, a 1m55.956s, good enough for 16th in that particular session.
“I am very happy that our cooperation continues in GP3 this season,” said Laaksonen.
“Last season in Euroformula Open showed that Campos is a highly motivated team full of professionals.
“And our last GP3 test in Abu Dhabi also showed that they have top speed in GP3.
“I know that GP3 series is really tough especially for rookie drivers but with a familiar team and a good preparation time, I’m confident.”
Laaksonen is the third driver confirmed for the 2018 GP3 season, following ART Grand Prix’s reveal that Ferrari young driver Callum Ilott and Force India test driver Nikita Mazepin will race for the French GP3 juggernaut this year.
