Ferrari academy racer Callum Ilott will step up from European Formula 3 to compete in the 2018 GP3 season with reigning drivers’ and teams’ champions ART.

Ilott raced for a third season in F3 in 2017, claiming six wins on his way to fourth in the drivers’ championship, while also making his F2 debut with Trident at Silverstone.

He completed 179 laps for the French outfit across three days of post-season testing at Abu Dhabi, setting the fastest time on the afternoon of the first day.

The 19-year-old said that his switch was made in conjunction with Ferrari, who have previously supported Antonio Fuoco and Giuliano Alesi in the third-tier of the racing ladder.

“Together with the Ferrari Driver Academy, we made the decision to do GP3 with ART and I’m really happy with this as the first step in our partnership,” he said.

“To be selected by ART for one of its much-coveted seats is a real privilege.”

Team president Sebastien Philippe added that Ilott is expected to compete for glory in the series.

“He has shown during his young career that he has very interesting potential,” he said.

“We have no doubt at all that he has all the assets needed to fight for the title in 2018.”

Ilott is the first driver to be signed for the final season of the category.
