Montoya: Williams signing Kubica would be ‘a joke’
Ex-Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya says the possibility of Robert Kubica returning to the grid next year with Williams is “a joke”.
Kubica is heavily-linked with an unexpected return to the sport, just six years after his near-fatal rally accident that severed his right hand and arm.
The Pole tested a 2017 car for Renault in Hungary earlier this year, and has secretly driven a 2014-spec Williams amid rumours he is contention to partner Lance Stroll for 2018.
Williams technical chief Paddy Lowe has refused to rule Kubica out of the picture for a seat next season, even hinting the one-time grand prix winner will take part in the end of season test in Abu Dhabi for the team.
Montoya, who raced for Williams between 2001-2004, has doubts Kubica will be able to cope with the physical constraints of an F1 car should he make a sensational comeback.
“Honestly, it’s a joke,” said Montoya.
“I’m sure Robert is no longer 100 per cent capable of pushing a Formula 1 car to the limit.”
Williams co-founder Patrick Head does not share the Columbian’s view, believing the 32-year-old would be a good choice for the Grove outfit if he is physically ready to drive and perform at a high level.
“Robert was one of the best drivers in F1 of recent years.
“Only he knows how ready he is for the challenge. He was seriously injured, and Williams wants to find out what his situation is.
“If he is able to perform from a physical point of view, he is a very good choice.”
